DESCRIPTION

This project was created in my senior-level design studio on visual systems. The project required me to research an artifact to better understand its origin and significance and then design a printed booklet about it.

After a few weeks of deep research into my artifact, gin, I designed a booklet for people who are just getting into the unique spirit. The booklet includes a history of gin, an explanation of botanicals and how gin is made, a breakdown of the four gin types, and some beginner gin cocktail recipes.

PROCESS DOCUMENTATION

PRECEDENTS
Before creating any sort of mood board or visual language for my project, I collected images of how gin is marketed and viewed by the world. These images allowed me to see what has already been done and helped guide me as I moved forward in the exploration process.
MOOD BOARD
After establishing precedents for my artifact, I developed a mood board for my booklet and visual language. Gin is unique from other liquors in that it is flavored by botanicals and herbs. This unique origin inspired a field guide style (field guides often document plant life) for the booklet.
COLLAGE PROCESS
I wanted the booklet to feel as if someone made it by hand. All of the images needed to be taped inside, handwritten notes needed to fill the pages of the book, and printed type needed to be limited.

To make the images feel real, I cut out and tore up all the images that I needed and scanned them into the computer. These scans were then collaged in photoshop to be placed in the final book layout. In addition to the photos, I also scanned in my own handwritten annotations to be placed throughout the booklet.
FINAL BOOKLET
The final booklet stands 8.5 inches tall by 5.5 inches wide and contains 14 pages of research, collaged images, and handwritten notes.
